Resources for Physician Burnout

Recently, an ABPMR board-director led research team published a prospective, cross-sectional study on physician burnout in the field of PM&R (read a summary and link to the article here). In our study, about half of all respondents met the definition of burnout, and two-thirds reported becoming more callous toward patients.

In addition to conducting the research to move the literature forward on this topic, the ABPMR wants to be sure its diplomates are aware of currently available resources for physician burnout; read on for a couple high-quality sources with multiple burnout interventions.

National Academy of Medicine

In 2017, the National Academy of Medicine launched the Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience, a network of more than 60 organizations committed to reversing trends in clinician burnout. One of the resources produced from this collaborative is the Clinician Well-Being Knowledge Hub, a repository of resources designed to combat physician burnout. We encourage our diplomates to explore these resources and check out the other activities, including national meeting and advocacy, initiated by the Action Collaborative.

American Medical Association

The American Medical Association has several resources dedicated to combating physician burnout, including a Burnout Tip-of-the-Week email subscription, STEPS Forward learning modules for CME credit, the AMA Moving Medicine podcast, and more. The AMA says it is "committed to identifying solutions that increase joy in medicine." Check out their burnout page here and click some of the resources for more information; searching 'burnout' on the AMA website yields other articles and resources.
