Spinal Cord Injury Medicine

Spinal cord injury medicine (SCIM) addresses the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of traumatic spinal cord injury and nontraumatic etiologies of spinal cord dysfunction.

The care team is comprised of interspecialty healthcare professionals providing care on a lifelong basis, including related medical, physical, psychological, and vocational disabilities and complications. This specialty encompasses patients of all ages.

The ABPMR offers subspecialty certification in in order to enhance the quality of care available to individuals with spinal cord dysfunction. Subspecialty certification in SCIM has been offered by the ABPMR since 1998. Examinations are administered every other year at Pearson Professional Centers nationwide.

The Exam

  • 280 questions
  • Two 3.5-hour sections
  • 60-minute break between sections
  • 7 hours active testing + tutorial and break

Practice and Training Requirements

Before You Apply

Candidates who apply for subspecialty certification in SCIM through the ABPMR must hold current board certification by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and must have a current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in at least one jurisdiction in the United States, its territories, or Canada.

In addition, applicants for the SCIM Examination must satisfactorily complete 12 months of an ACGME-accredited fellowship in SCIM and:

  • Be evaluated annually by the program director
  • Be recommended for admissibility to the SCIM Examination by the program director upon successful completion of the training program
  • Finish the training program after completing residency and by the August 31 that precedes the examination date
