Sports Medicine

Sports medicine is a clinical subspecialty that is concerned with physical fitness and the diagnosis and treatment of injuries sustained in sports activities.

The ABPMR offers subspecialty certification in sports medicine in order to improve the quality of care of individuals engaged in physical exercise (sports). Subspecialty certification in sports medicine has been offered by the ABPMR since 2007. Examinations are administered twice annually at Prometric Testing Centers nationwide.

Because sports medicine is recognized as an interdisciplinary specialty, the ABPMR cosponsors subspecialty certification in sports medicine along with the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and three other boards. This means that the ABPMR credentials and issues sports medicine subspecialty certificates for ABPMR diplomates, but the ABFM is responsible for examination development, administration, scoring, and analysis.
