PM&R Residency Training Requirements to Undergo Review by the ACGME

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) PM&R Residency Committee (RCPMR) plans to review and revise the PM&R residency training requirements in 2024 as part of its decennial process. In anticipation of these revisions, the ABPMR, in partnership with the American Academy of PM&R (AAPM&R) and the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) recently completed a comprehensive effort to receive broad input into the future needs of the field and to translate those needs into recommendations for changes to residency program requirements.

This collaborative effort began in 2017 and culminated in 2023 with a final report approved by the boards of the three organizational sponsors and forwarded to the RCPMR. An overarching theme to the suggested revisions was an emphasis on movement toward use of competency-based assessments, rather than time-determined rotation lengths, both to determine exposure within the core areas of training, and to provide opportunities for some residents to gain increased experience in areas of interests.

The ACGME standards revision process for PM&R will begin with a Stakeholder Summit in early December 2023.
