Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine

Pediatric rehabilitation medicine (PRM) is the subspecialty that uses an interdisciplinary approach to address the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of congenital and childhood-onset physical impairments including related or secondary medical, physical, functional, psychosocial, cognitive, and vocational limitations or conditions, with an understanding of the life course of disability.

The ABPMR offers subspecialty certification in PRM in order to enhance the quality of care available to individuals with pediatric rehabilitation needs and their families. Subspecialty certification in PRM has been offered by the ABPMR since 2003. Examinations are administered annually at Pearson Professional Centers nationwide.

The Exam

  • 280 questions
  • Two 3.5-hour sections
  • 60-minute break between sections
  • 7 hours active testing + tutorial and break

Practice and Training Requirements

Before You Apply

Candidates who apply for subspecialty certification in PRM must be ABPMR diplomates in good standing and must have a current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in at least one jurisdiction in the United States, its territories, or Canada.

In addition, applicants for the PRM Examination must satisfactorily fulfill training requirements, which comprise these options:

  • 1.

    Two years of an ACGME-accredited PRM fellowship after PM&R residency
  • 2.

    PM&R/pediatrics combined training program
  • 3.

    Successful completion of consecutive ACGME-accredited residency training programs in both PM&R and pediatrics, including at least six months of pediatric rehabilitation medicine training

Applicants must also:

  • Be evaluated annually by their program director
  • Be recommended for admissibility to the PRM Examination by the fellowship program director upon successful completion of the training program
  • Finish the training program after completing residency and by the August 31 that precedes the examination date
