Welcome, Dr. Apkon!

The ABPMR is pleased to announce the addition of Susan Apkon, MD, to its board of directors. Dr. Apkon was elected to serve on the board at the ABPMR Winter Board Meeting in January.

Dr. Apkon received her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed residency at the University of Colorado. She holds board certification in PM&R and is sub-certified in pediatric rehabilitation medicine; she is also board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics.

Currently Dr. Apkon serves as Fischahs Chair in Pediatric Rehabilitation at Children’s Hospital Colorado, and Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She is a dedicated volunteer for the ABPMR and has been involved with the board since 2002. Her volunteer activities for the ABPMR include serving as an examiner for the Part II Examination since 2004 and an item writer for the exam since 2016, and as an item writer and associate director for the Pediatric Rehabilitation Examination.

Dr. Apkon is involved with Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, a national organization with a mission to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy. She currently chairs the Publications Committee of the Muscular Dystrophy Association MOVR study (a national registry of patients with neuromuscular conditions). In topics related to the treatment of Duchenne and other neuromuscular conditions, she has been an investigator for numerous clinical trials, published extensively, presented nationally and internationally, and is an active participant in expert panels in this area.

Throughout her career, Dr. Apkon has been recognized with an outstanding teaching award and faculty research mentor award from the University of Colorado, and a distinguished clinician award and outstanding council service award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Apkon has also received the Seattle Magazine Top Doctor award seven times and the 5280 Top Doctor Denver award six times.

I believe in this mission and focus on the certification process to be able to deliver on this commitment. I see the ABPMR as an organization that’s innovative and strategic, and I’m excited to be a part of it,” Dr. Apkon said.

Physician board directors of the ABPMR serve up to two five-year terms, and Dr. Apkon begins her first term in August 2022. Welcome, Dr. Apkon!
